An All-Purpose Spice Blend For Adding Fab
Flavours and Aromas to Your Meals

Making your own spice blend is the absolute key to better tasting home cooked food. And below you'll find an all-purpose recipe that will add fab flavours and mouthwatering aromas and that can be made in literally minutes. (See the bottom of the page for links to more of my recipes)

Note: For this recipe, I recommend using a few whole ingredients when and where you can as these will add the best flavours and aromas. However, if you don't have them whole, you can use their pre-ground versions and reduce the quantities the recipe requires by half. For example, if it says 2 tablespoons of whole coriander seeds, you would use 1 tablespoon of pre-ground coriander. Reduce any others you don't have whole by half as well and stir in with any other powders when making.

2 tsp chili powder
2 tsp sea salt
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp onion powder
6-7 dried bay leaves

tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon

Directions:

  • Crumble the bay
  • Grind the bay along with the salt, rosemary, cumin, coriander and peppercorns
  • Add to a bowl
  • Stir in the paprika, garlic, chili and onion powders
  • Finally, crumble in the dried basil and stir again

Store in a cool place, in an airtight jar and out of direct sunlight. Use within 2-3 months.

Note: You can dry toast the cumin, coriander and peppercorns for a few minutes to release even more flavours. See the grinding page for info and photos on this recommended cooking technique. (Link opens in new window)
