Chai Tea Mix Recipe - Enjoy a Delicious
Cup of Indian Spiced Tea Anytime

Chai has become very popular in the West in recent years and making your own chai tea mix is very quick and simple to do. So, if you're into making homemade spiced and herbal teas then this is the blend for you! Super easy-to-make, it'll enable you to enjoy a fabulous cup of chai anytime you like. (See the bottom of the page for more homemade mixes)

What You'll Need: (makes about 4 tablespoons)

1 tbsp green cardamom pods
1 tbsp dried ginger root (or 1 tsp ginger powder)
1 tbsp cinnamon chips
1 tbsp dried orange peel
2 tsp mix of black and white peppercorns
1 tsp whole cloves

tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon

Directions:

  • Add everything to a pestle and mortar and grind as best as you can (The idea is to open the cardamom pods and to break down the ingredients a little so the flavours infuse)
  • If you used ginger powder instead of the dried root stir that into the blend as well

OR

  • If you prefer, add everything to your grinder and very coarsely grind by pulsing the button. (Don't grind too fine)

Store your chai mix in a cool place in an airtight jar and out of direct sunlight. Use within 3 months.

Note: Cinnamon chips are simply small pieces of cinnamon that you can purchase. Personally, I just broke a whole cinnamon stick up into little pieces.

Why You Should Make Your Own Mixes and Seasonings

Not only is making your own tastier, it also gives you a chance to experiment with different spices, combinations and proportions...

...For example, just a few of the myriad of chai tea ingredients you could use include: Star anise, fennel seeds, nutmeg, mace, coriander and even chili! So feel free to experiment.

Of course it's convenient to pop to the store and pick up a commercial spiced tea mix; but here's why I recommend you make your own...

  • Tons more flavour than store-bought mixes that will be transferred to your homemade spiced beverage
  • You decide what is added. Not keen on a certain ingredient? Leave it out completely or just use another
  • Whilst it's likely there will be a use by date, it's unlikely there is a date of manufacture. It may have been made months (or even years) ago before sitting on the store shelf for a period of time slowly losing it's wonderful flavour!
  • No added extras, e.g artificial colours, additives or preservatives. And If you use organic ingredients your chai tea mix will be free of pesticides and GMO's!
