Chai Tea Mix Recipe - Enjoy a Delicious Cup
of Homemade Masala Chai Any Time

Chai tea has become very popular in the West in recent years and making your own chai tea mix is very quick and simple to do. You could of course buy a commercial blend to make this unique spiced beverage, but not only is making your own tastier, it also gives you a chance to experiment with different spices and combinations and proportions...

...For example, just a few of the myriad of chai tea ingredients you could use include: Star anise, fennel seeds, nutmeg, mace, coriander and even chili! So feel free to experiment. (See the bottom of the page for links to more of my homemade seasonings and blends)

Homemade Chai Tea Mix

What You'll Need: (makes about 2 tablespoons)

2 tsp green cardamom pods
1½ tsp ginger powder
1½ tsp black peppercorns
1½ tsp allspice berries
1 tsp whole cloves
1 tsp ground cinnamon

tbsp = tablespoon

Directions:

  • Remove the seeds from the cardamom pods and discard the husks
  • Grind the cardamom seeds, cloves, allspice berries and peppercorns
  • Add to a bowl
  • Finally, stir in the cinnamon and ginger powders

Store your chai mix in a cool place in an airtight jar and out of direct sunlight. Use within 3 months.

Note: I use a few whole spices which I then grind. If you don't have them whole, just use pre-ground powders and reduce the amount the recipe says by about half. So for this recipe in place of the whole ingredients I'd use 1 teaspoon of ground cardamom, 3/4 teaspoon of black pepper, 3/4 reaspoon of ground allspice and ½ teaspoon of ground cloves.
