Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe - A Herby
Blend For Cheese and Vegetable Fillings

A quality homemade taco seasoning recipe is a necessity when making traditional Mexican tacos. And by making it yourself you can tailor the ingredients to whatever filling you choose. Something you can't do if you buy a commercial mix. This is a herby version for cheese and vegetables fillings(See the bottom of the page for links to more of my homemade recipes)

What You'll Need: (makes about 10 tablespoons)

3 tbsp cumin seeds
3 tbsp chili powder
2 tbsp sweet paprika
2 tbsp Mexican oregano
2 tbsp dried basil
1 tbsp dried sage
3-4 tsp onion powder
3-4 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp peppercorns
2 tsp annatto seeds (optional)
1½ tsp salt
1 tsp grated nutmeg

tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon

Directions:

  • Finely grind the salt, peppercorns, annatto (if using) and cumin
  • Sieve into a bowl
  • Add the chili, paprika, onion, garlic and grated nutmeg
  • Crumble in the sage, basil and oregano. Combine thoroughly

Store your homemade taco spice in an airtight jar out of direct sunlight. Use within 3 months.

Note: Whilst this is a delicious mix as it is, dry toasting the cumin, peppercorns and annatto seeds before grinding and combining with the other ingredients will add even more flavours to the finished blend.

Ingredient Note: I use whole cumin, annatto and peppercorns for this recipe which I then grind. If you only have pre-ground available just use this and reduce the amounts by half. So for 2 teaspoons of peppercorns you would use 1 teaspoon ground pepper. Reduce the cumin and annatto amounts by half as well if you don't have whole.
