If you regularly make fajitas, then a homemade fajita seasoning mix recipe is something you're sure to enjoy. The fabulous flavours and mouthwatering aromas it will add to your food are far better than any blend you can buy! (See the bottom of the page for more of my homemade recipes)
What You'll Need: (makes about 10 tablespoons)
3 tbsp chili powder (hot or mild)
2 tbsp cumin seeds
2 tbsp dried Mexican oregano (or other oregano variety)
1 tbsp dried thyme
1 tbsp dried parsley
1 tbsp garlic powder
4 tsp smoked paprika powder (or regular paprika)
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp salt (see note 2)
2 tsp black peppercorns
tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon
Directions:
Store your fajita mix in a cool place in an airtight jar and out of direct sunlight. Use within 3 months.
Note: If you have the time, dry toasting the cumin seeds and peppercorns prior to grinding and combining with the pre-ground powders will add even more flavours and aromas to your finished blend. Click here to read more. (Link opens in new window)
Note 2: You could use any salt for this recipe, however, I do recommend using a good quality type: sea/rock/flakes etc as they're less processed and I think tastier. However, you can use regular table salt (I sometimes do) if that's all you have available.
Ingredient Note: I recommend using as many whole ingredients as possible for the best flavours. However, if you only have pre-ground powders available, use them and simply reduce the amounts by half. For example 2 tablespoons of cumin seeds equals about 1 tablespoon of pre-ground cumin. Reduce any others you don't have whole by half as well and stir in with any other powder when making.
