Chinese Five Spice Powder - Capture the
Authentic Flavours of Asian Cooking

Everyone should make five spice powder! It's such a quick and easy blend you can't really go wrong! And your homemade blend can be used to season your pork and duck stir fry dishes, sprinkled over noodles or used as a rub for all kinds of meat. (See the bottom of the page for links to more of my recipes)

What You'll Need: (makes about 4-5 tablespoons)

6-8 star anise
2 tbsp fennel seed
1 tbsp peppercorns
2 tsp whole cloves
3-4 inch piece of cinnamon

tbsp = tablespoon
tsp = teaspoon

Directions:

  • Break up the cinnamon into smallish pieces
  • Finely grind the cinnamon along with the peppercorns, fennel, cloves and star anise
  • Finally, sieve the just ground ingredients into a bowl and stir together

Store your 5 spice powder in an airtight jar out of direct sunlight. Use within 3 months before making more.

Note: You can dry toast the five ingredients before grinding. This greatly intensifies the flavours and aromas. Click here to read more about toasting and grinding. (Link opens in new window)

Ingredient Note: For authentic flavours, try and use whole ingredients for this Chinese powder. If you only have pre-ground powders just use these, but reduce the quantities by about half. For example, in this recipe 2 tablespoons of whole fennel seeds would equal 1 tablespoon of pre-ground fennel. Reduce any others you don't have whole by half as well.
